Lets evaluate!! Part 7

Who would distribute my media product and why?

Well because I am a unknown director with an unknown cast and a very low budget there is no way a big cinema would ever be showcasing my product because it just doesn't have any of those thing which all the major films at the moment have. For example it isn't shot in HD and the set is all inside my own house. I also made it with the idea in mind of making people think and challenging the view points they have on things. This could make it quite controversial so this makes it even less likely for them to showcase the film as they wouldn't want to offend people. Most people that go to watch a film also don't want to have to watch something that makes them think about what they are doing in their own life and because that the big cinemas such as odeon attract these people they are less likely to show it.

However smaller cinemas such as "cinema city" are more likely to show case my film as they show more controversial and smaller films made on a lower budget. Their customers are more willing to see something that makes them think about their lives and that challenges the way they think. This makes them more likely to show it.

Lovefilm is a company that post people films to watch and will post another off their wish list when they return the one they have at a monthly charge. Lovefilm has a huge range of films, going from the big Hollywood hits to small films that never made it to the big screen. Because they have as many films as they can to try to please their customers it is possible they would distribute mine.

I could also use youtube because anyone can upload whatever videos they choose to do. Youtube is a media institution but unless I become a partner I won't make any money from my film.

Lets Evaluate!! Part 6

How does my media product challenge the conventions of conventional media?

Well my product challenges it in a lot of ways, these are:

  • 13 year old girl as a main role, usually these are older males in the main roles
  • Different editing style, with the short clips quickly followed by the long clips
  • Using the extreme levels of contrast and low brightness in the shots when the music starts playing isn't usually used in mainstream films
  • Using sound that at the start seems to be non-diegetic but turns out to be diegetic (tap dripping noise and the start). This is rarely used in a film but I like it as I think that it raises tension until you realise it is diegetic sound and then lowers tension
  • Using a quote is rarely used but I think this worked well and it connotes that their is a lot to come
It however does use some of them though:
  • it is set in a middle class western world home, if I could have used a different location I would have but it wasn't feasible for me to travel to another country
  • starts with establishing shots that draw the audience in and lets them know where they are in the film. It is also a good chance for them to take in the mise en scene to understand what the film could be like and what the characters are like
  • The girl in it is dressed as a typical 13 year old girl and the rest of the house fulfills all the stereo types of a middle class western house

Lets evaluate!!!!! Part 5

What have I learnt about technologies from the process of constructing my product?

I started this with a bit of knowledge about "pinnacle" editing software which is similar to premier pro only less powerful. Other than that I had little knowledge of editing software and different camera types.

While creating my film opening I learnt a lot about adobe after effects, which I used to create my company
ident, telletubies sequence and recreations of Saul Bass' works. I learnt about how to use shape, solid and text layers and how to create 3D text to make it seem like it's coming from behind you and is more professional.

I also learnt how to edit with premier pro. I learnt different ways of editing to create different moods, such as short clips can increase the pace which I used when plugging the ipod in or walking through the bedroom door in my piece.

I also learnt that Youtube not only has silly videos on for me to laugh at when I'm bored but it also is a great place to find tutorials to help with learning how to edit or to upload by own videos for the world to see.

This website itself (blogger) is a good website for posting text or videos as well, however I have found it difficult to get the pictures to be where I want them which can get very frustrating so when doing something like this again I would prefer to use different website.

The actual camera and equipment I used was all very new to me. When doing the opening shots of different rooms for my piece I used a tripod to keep the camera steady which I thought was much better than doing it by hand. Also the computers we were using the edit couldn't seem to cope with the difficulty of the editing so it became very difficult to edit as they were very slow. I just had to try to work around this but it made it very difficult so in the future I would be sure to try to use a very high standard computer

Rough Cut

This is a very rough cut of my work so far. I still need to add some more diegetic sound and transitions. I would also like to spend more time editing to neaten it up.

Shot list

Just a list of the shots I used when shooting my film (in chronological order)

  1. shot of parents room-mid shot
  2. slow pan of childs room-mid shot
  3. slow pan of another childs room-mid shot
  4. slow pan of hallway-mid shot
  5. shot of toilet-mid shot
  6. tap-close up
  7. esme walking out of bathroom-mid shot
  8. door open-close up
  9. walks through door-close up
  10. door closes-close up
  11. picks up ipod-mid shot
  12. pick up speaker-close up
  13. open up speaker-close up
  14. turn on speaker-close up
  15. plug in speaker-close up
  16. play music-mid shot
  17. brushes hair in the mirror-over the sholder shot
  18. esme walking out of room-canted angle
  19. speaker gets grabbed-top shot slow zoom

I used the mixture of mid and close ups to try and increase and then decrease the speed of how my film looks a lot to make it more interesting to watch.

Ident problems

My original ident was to small so that when I imported it into premier pro it was only in the middle of the screen and had a lot of empty space around it. Because of this I decided I was going to have to make a new ident that was the correct size.

I changed my ident a lot from the original idea. I changed the name to "Voltartworks" and I changed the image from a quick animation to a complicated and slightly gothic style animation. I am happier with how this one looks and I feel that it has a more proffesional feel to it.

My new ident:

Ident

This is my ident that I am going use in my film. I like the cartoon look it has and I think it works well with the name "street kid films." I also like it being in black and white

Practise ident

This is a practise Ident I did based on the work of Saul Bauss

Company idents

Universal pictures ident:

I think this ident is very effective. I liked the rays of light coming out of the world and I think that the music is very powerful, especially with the visual. However I don't like the font of the text. I think that it seems a bit dated now and could do with being changed. I think that the text rolling round with the world is a very nice touch and I might do something similar in my own ident.

Disney ident:

I also think this is a very effective ident. I like how glamorous and powerful the fireworks make it. I also like how you feel like you are moving with the camera as it goes backwards. I don't think that the night background works very well though. For my ident I want it to seem more down to earth and less striking.

Mise en scene

Shots of house:

No people
Clean
No windows open

Bathroom:

Empty room
Towels on rack
Neat and Tidy
Everything in it's place

Bedroom:

Clothes on floor
Bed not made
Posters everywhere
Window open

Lounge:

looks like it's had an attempt to be tidied and clean but has just been made messy again

Overall I want it to seem like an average family home, nothing really out of the ordinary.

She is popular with good friends and doing well at school although if she worked harder she could be achieving more. She is happy and has few responsibilites and pressures. Character and Characterisation

Character and Characterisation are important parts of a film. Without an intresting character the film won't be as intresting and if the character isn't correctly characterised then we may not get the wrong impression from the character or not feel we can fully relate to them.
  • Characterisation is all observable parts of humans: age, sex, IQ, home, car, fashion sense, personality and attitudes. All these traits work together to make each person unique and one of a kind.
  • Character is how the person will react to situations and pressure, if involved a very stressful or trying situation they may react differently to how we believed they will due to their characterisation. The persons character may be very different to what we first believed.
  • Character Arc is the changes in a character, how they react to something at the start may be very different to how they react at the end. Robert McKee said that "if we are introduced to a loving husband and by the end of the tale he is still a loving husband, with no secret, no unfulfilled dreams, no hidden passions we will be very disappointed."
  • Structure and Character are interlocked. If the structure changes the character must change accordingly and if the character changes the structure must also change with it.

Target Audience

Target Audience is a very important part of planning, writing and marketing your film. If you can't say who it is aimed at you are unlikely to be able to get funding for your film, it will also be more difficult to market your film.

The Audience and how they work:

Age: 64% of the audience is made up by people ranging from 7-34 years. So most films will be marketed and aimed towards that age range. However these people only make up 39% of the population. So the rest of the population rarely in comparison so it isn't worth aiming a film at them if you want to make money (which is what most films are made for)

Genre: The main genres out there are Sci-fi, horror, comedy, romance, action, thriller and film nor. Each genre attracts a certain kind of person and they will all expect certain things from films in a certain genre. For example people going to see a comedy will expect it to be funny whereas they won't expect this from a horror. Fans of one genre may not like other genres, like fans of Sci-fi are unlikely to also like romance. Genres can cross over as well to attract a larger audience.

Fame and shame: The fame of the cast or director can also effect who goes to see the film, some actors or directors may have a fan base who goes to see films they are in regardless of other things. Famous actors will be more expensive as well though so you have to take this into account. It can also work the other way round, if an actor has been involved in a scandal or something people may not want to go see their film.

Audience types: There are 4 main types of film watchers. Mainstream, mainstream plus, aficionados and buffs.
Mainstream people are the kind of person that only goes to see big blockbusters, films with a famous cast and a lot of advertising and generally are very mainstream. They use it as a way of escape so go to see it for enjoyment and don't expect to have different or unpopular views raised in the film
Mainstream plus people are similar to mainstream but may also watch slightly less popular films, also mainly for their enjoyment though.
Aficionados will watch a lot of films that aren't seen as big blockbusters and have a more unknown cast. These films may raise different or extreme ideas and they will go to see a film that challenges the way they think or makes them wonder about a matter. They will also see mainstream big blockbuster films.
Buffs usually go see films alone and possibly more than once. The films they see will usually be very unknown and they will have to seek themselves out themselves through magazines such as empire or the Internet. The films they see will raise unusual or taboo topics and will be much more "arty" and be in smaller less known cinemas. They are a small part of the audience so films made with the aim of making money will not be targeted at them.

Be sure you know who your target audience this is as it can affect, who comes to see it, how it is marketed, what kind of company will fund you, the cast that will want to be in it and why they see your film. If you want to make money it is probably best to aim it at mainstream and mainstream plus film watchers that are between 7-34. If you want people to think about your film and it isn't made to only make money it's best to aim your film at aficionados or buffs.
